International Human rights are of the upmost importance to Nikki

As a Member of the European Parliament, Nikki has visited countries such as Tunisia and Cyprus as a member of the Human Rights committee.

Just weeks after the fall of Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali, Nikki was the only UK Parliamentarian to attend talks in Tunisia with the new interim government as part of an ad hoc parliamentary delegation.

In December 2012, Nikki flew to Bahrain as part of a delegation where she held meetings with the high levels of government, as well as meeting with prisoners in Jau prison who are incarcerated for allegedly taking part in violent demonstrations.

May 2013 saw Nikki sponsor the annual Kashmir week which was held in the European Parliament in Brussels. Nikki was accompanied by a group of Kashmiris from the West Midlands as they sought to raise the issue of human rights abuses in Kashmir. Nikki is supporting and feels solidarity with the people of Kashmir as they are also calling for a referendum on their own future – something that they were promised, but never got.

Nikki has also worked diligently to highlight the plight of the missing people of Cyprus. In 1974, 1619 people, including women and children, went missing after Turkey invaded the country. Cyprus is the latest country to face economic uncertainty in the EU, a crisis which has been its own citizens queuing at banks to withdraw all their money as they fear money will become inaccessible.

Malala Yousefzai was the EU Sakharov prize winner in 2013, which Nikki nominated her for. She met the prize winner in 2013 ahead o her acceptance speech. Niki was immnsley proud that Malala was one of her own constituents after settling in Birmingham.

The World Cup in 2022 is being held in Qatar and this has been a hot topic in the news media. Nikki travelled to Qatar to speak to the Government, civil society and the workers themselves about the claims of 'Slave Labour' that are being made.
